Estudiantes-Real Madrid: Derby set to close out the first round of the league

NEWS | 12/01/2020 | Edu Bueno

The Whites want to remain leaders before the double Euroleague commitments in Russia (12:30pm CET).
After the 13th consecutive win in the Euroleague last Thursday, Real Madrid now have 3 games in 5 days. First is the derby against Estudiantes to close out the first round of the league before the Euroleague in Russia against CSKA (Tuesday) and Khimki (Thursday). It is an uneven game on paper. Real Madrid, the first placed team, face Estudiantes, the last placed team. The reality is that a derby is not affected by the table. Laso will be without Llull, Deck, Randolph, Rudy or Causeur.

Real Madrid are in great form, fighting the injuries with great team spirit. Estudiantes always challenge Laso's side. An example of that is the 93-88 win they managed last year. They need wins, only winning four times until now, and their position in the table will be motivation to beat Real Madrid again, whilst the Whites want to stay at the top of the table.

Real Madrid will be top of the table for the Copa del Rey draw.

Laso's team will be counting on defense, the best in the competition. They concede as many points as Estudiantes score (75.1). The Whites also average 85 points per game. The madridistas are a strong team unit. Tavares (14.5 PIR) leads the team in which five players are in double digits for PIR. Thompkins is in form. The North American started the year averaging 17.3 points in three games he has played.

The face a rival made up of six key players (Scrubb, Pressey, Arteaga, Douglas, Kadji and Avramovic), who score more than 75% of their points. The Serbian who came in for Brizuela (signed by Unicaja) is in fine form and will be a real threat for the home side.

The most wins in the last decade
Real Madrid got the most wins in the decade of 2010-20 in the ACB. A total of 367 compared to 343 for Barça. They got a record for points in a game (129 against Montakit Fuenlabrada) on 11th April 2016; rebounds (57); and assists (35). Today the first derbi of the decade. Whatever happens, they are top of the pile for the Copa del Rey draw this Monday.
