NEWS | 27/05/2019Amancio, Luyk, Butragueño and Gonzalo de Carlos reminisced about the former Whites' president at the forum event that's named after him.
Involved in the panel discussion were his grandson, Gonzalo de Carlos, who is the president of the Peña Madridista Luis de Carlos; Emilio Butragueño, the club's director of institutional relations; and club legends, Amancio Amaro and Clifford Luyk.
Gonzalo de Carlos: "He was a role model"
"My grandad led by example, he passed on everything that Madrid stands for: gentlemanly values and respect for the opposition, education, battling qualities, knowing how to win and lose... I believe that Real Madrid is the best club in the world, not only on account of what's been won, but for what it stands for".
Amancio: "Never did I see him looking down"
"In the 14 years that I spent together with Luis de Carlos at the club, what really sticks in my mind was what a gentleman he was. He always had a smile on his face. Never did I see him looking down. He was the sort of person you don't forget".
Clifford Luyk: "A great president and a gentleman"
"A great president, a magnificent person and a gentleman. We all agree that he did a tremendous job during his tenure, whilst also being an excellent person. He always treated everyone in an exceptional way and I'll never forget his really generous smile".
Butragueño: "He embodied values like respect"
"When I see photos of him and the name Luis de Carlos, the first thing that comes to mind is respect. Real Madrid have been so successful for such a long period of time on account of great players and the club's values. Don Luis was close to Don Santiago. Those values have been handed down from generation to generation. Don Luis was the perfect embodiment of those values. We will continue to be champions and role models across the world if we manage to pass on the values that Don Luis represented to the next generation. This is what Real Madrid is all about".
