Laso: “We could not play our best possible game to beat CSKA”

“We are sad to have lost but congratulations to the team, we had a great run in the Euroleague”, added the coach.
Real Madrid coach Pablo Laso, spoke about the Final Four semi-final against CSKA Moscow, which ended with the Russian team winning 95-90: "It's hard to explain right now because I'd like to watch the game back. I am a coach who wants to look at things in depth and think about what we did right and where we went wrong. We had to make strange rotations, Ayón had to leave the court twice because he was bleeding, and he did not realise it. We could not play our best possible game to beat CSKA but they have real talent and it showed today. We need to learn from today and do things better in the future."

"I want to say well done to my team, they had a great season in the Euroleague. We won many Regular League games, got though the playoffs and we even got to the Final Four. It was a real battle against a great team. We are angry to have lost, but the team really pushed themselves, they strived to win. We did so much, some things went well and others not so well. We need to focus on the final month in the Endesa League".

Key moments
"When we got the advantage, we played well both offensively and defensively. The team had some fouling problems but and we had to rotate. They have some real quality and sank some key shots, we could have defended those shots and in the end, they were really confident with the free throws".

Referees
"I have my own thoughts on it but it I need to watch the game back. It is true that there was a big difference between the number of fouls and free throws. I did not understand why I got a technical for turning to the bench and saying 'why is Edy shooting?' It was not a protest, it was a personal thing. I turned around and threw a towel in a nothing situation".

We were champions until today and we had a good chance to win it again.

“I am as disappointed as anyone. My obligation is the same as when we win, celebrate but then focus on what is next. If I was to say it is not a big deal that would be absurd. We were champions until today and had a good opportunity to win the whole thing again. As athletes, we need to turn the situation around as soon as possible. We have a game within the next 48 hours and the players know that".

What did the referees say?
"They cannot take their decision back. What I can do? I could have protested more and got kicked out. Neither of the other two referees could understand it. I am not going to focus on it now, we all make mistakes. The other referees could not explain it either because they hadn’t seen it".

Repeated free throw in favour of CSKA
"It wasn’t down to me, why punish me? There were plenty of situations like that."

Llull
"He has real heart. He wanted to play better today for sure. It's been two tough years because of his injuries. He was key when we won the last Euroleague title, he was MVP in the Super Cup ... he is a very emotional person and I am sure he wanted to play better".

The future
"I am not going to focus on losing that game. When we win by 14 I think it is not yet won and when we are losing by 14 I don’t think of it as lost. Playing in the final of the Super Cup and the Cup shows the players’ quality. This team has a lot of character and I am always sure that we can pick ourselves up just as we did after the Cup."
