Real Madrid beat Kashima Antlers in the final of the tournament, which was played in Japan.
Real Madrid were crowned world champion for the fifth time in their history on December 18, 2016. They did so in Yokohama, beating Kashima Antlers in an exciting final that was decided in extra time. To get to the final, the Whites had beaten Club América de México (2-0).

In the final, Benzema opened the scoring before the Japanese turned things around with a goal just before the break and another on the restart, but Cristiano Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot, taking the game in to extra time. Two more goals from the Portuguese forward in extra time saw Real Madrid become the first five-time world champion.
