- Matchday 11
The physical demands of the match in Istanbul could be seen at the start of a first quarter that was dominated by Herbalife Gran Canaria, very well set up in defense, causing many turnovers, and with an effective game in attack commanded by Radicevic and DJ Strawberry (6-14, min 5). Yusta, with eight points, and the good work on the offensive rebound, dragged Real Madrid to the break (17-20, min 20).
Triples and defense to find the rhythm
The introduction of Campazzo, Rudy and Thompkins, with the later making his first league appearance this season, was essential for Laso’s team as they began to fire on all cylinders. The forward and the power forward opened up the Canarian defense with their success on the treys (5 from both and 10 points in seven minutes from the North American). There was more intensity in their play and Gran Canaria found it difficult to score. Carroll put the team up for the first time in the 14th minute making it 27-26 and, from there on, the Whites got on top of their opponents for the rest of the second quarter. A run of 18-5, making it 23-11, and maximum of +11 on the stroke of half time (40-29, minute 19).
The points dried up for the hosts as the teams came out for the second half. The islanders took advantage of the three-and-a-half-minute spell to creep back to within four points on several occasions. It was just the wake-up call Real Madrid needed, and they reacted superbly. Deck began to contain Herbalife while Campazzo, Taylor, Yusta and Carroll found the basket once again, leading a 21-6 run to restore a sense of calm to the WiZink Center. From 44-40 on 25’ to 65-46 on 30’.
Right on track
The madridistas' defensive solidity now ensured the Canary Island side had no way back into the game. Laso continued to rotate, Prepelic replacing Campazzo. Thompkins meanwhile kept up his three-point exhibition (five) and Reyes moved fourth on the all-time list of minutes played in the ACB, overtaking Navarro. Real Madrid came close to a 30-point advantage as they made sure of another fine win in front of the home faithful. Next up, the Euroleague Clásico.
