NEWS | 12/07/2018The Real Madrid trio of Varane, Modric and Kovacic will do battle for the World Cup crown in Russia.
The first Real Madrid involvement in a final came back in 1974, when Netzer featured for West Germany. The other madridistas to have reached the tournament's showdown are Stielike (1982), Valdano (1986), Ruggeri (1990), Karembeu (1998), Roberto Carlos (1998 and 2002), Zidane (2006), Casillas, Arbeloa, Albiol, Ramos, Xabi Alonso and Van der Vaart (2010) and Khedira and Di María (2014).
A guaranteed madridista World Cup winner
The fact that the final will be contested by France and Croatia means that a Real Madrid player is guaranteed to lift the World Cup and become the first player to do so since Khedira, who tasted glory with Germany at Brazil 2014. This encounter will represent a maiden World Cup final appearance for Varane, Modric and Kovacic. The French defender has featured in all six of his team's games and has been a key figure at the heart of the defence, whilst weighing in with a goal in the quarter-final meeting with Uruguay. As for Modric, he has led the way for Croatia in their journey to the final. A mainstay of the team, he has two goals to his name and has claimed the Man of the Match honours on three occasions. Kovacic, meanwhile, has featured in five of Croatia's six games.
