Real Madrid goes in search of fifth straight Copa del Rey crown

NEWS | 13/02/2018

The Whites get their tournament campaign up and running in Gran Canaria on Thursday against Unicaja Málaga (9:30pm CET).
Real Madrid heads into the Copa del Rey in Gran Canaria (15-18 February) bidding to claim the tournament title for a fifth straight edition. A roster for whom the word impossible doesn't exist, particularly when it comes to the cup competition, will be looking to pull off an impossible feat. With 27 trophies produly on display in the Bernabéu Tour, the madridistas, the only team to have taken the crown on four successive occasions under the tournament's current format, will be aiming to rewrite the history books.

Gran Canaria
The Whites have fond memories of their last cup appearance in Las Palmas. In the 2015 tournament, they lifted the trophy at the Gran Canaria Arena after prevailing over CAI Zaragoza in the quarters, seeing off Joventut in the semis and downing Barcelona in the final. In that year, Real Madrid smashed the record for treys in a single Copa del Rey game, sinking 16.

MVP
If there's one name that stands out in Copa de Rey showdowns it's that of Rudy Fernández. The Balearic-born small forward's trophy haul features three MVP awards, after being recognised as the competition's standout performer in Seville 2004, Vitoria 2008 and  Gran Canaria 2015, in what's an unprecedented feat. In the current Whites' roster, Llull has twice scooped the distinction (Barcelona 2012 and Vitoria 2017), whilst Ayón has one MVP award to his name (A Coruña 2016).

The route to glory in 2018
The Whites' first hurdle is a match-up against Unicaja Málaga, to be played on Thursday (9:30pm CET). The two teams have met twice before in the Copa del Rey, with the record reading one win apiece. Should the Whites advance to the semi-finals they will take on the winners of the tie between Valencia Basket and Iberostar Tenerife on Saturday (6:30pm). The final will be contested on Sunday 18 February at 6:30pm.
