Walter Samuel 'Edy' Tavares (22/03/1992, Maio, Cape Verde) will reinforce the Whites’ inside game until 2020. Real Madrid’s new incorporate brings power, strength and intimidation in the area with the signing of this 25 year old center who measures in at 2.20m, with experience in the ACB League (Gran Canaria) and in the NBA, where he played with Atlanta Hawks and Cleveland Cavaliers.
At 17 years old, Tavares arrived in Las Palmas from Cabo Verde to sign for Gran Canaria. His first steps in Spanish basketball were with the Gran Canarian youth academy before later being loaned to to UB Palma in the LEB Oro. In 2012/13 he made his debut with Herbalife Gran Canaria and in the 13/14 season became one of the sensations of the league and made the best five young players in the ACB. But it was in his last campaign in Spain (14/15) when he recorded his best numbers: 7.8 points, 8 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and an average of 13.4 PIR. That season he joined the best five players in the EuroCup, where he was runner-up with Gran Canaria.
At the end of that campaign, Tavares joins the Atlanta Hawks, who had chosen him in the 2014 draft. After playing 11 games in the NBA, he signed for the Austin Spurs of the G-League (the North American Development League) and a year later he joined the Raptors 905. In this last team he had an outstanding season (2016/17), in which he is chosen as the best defender and included in the best five after averaging 10.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks. After a brief stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the pivot returned to Toronto, the last stop prior to his arrival at Real Madrid.
