The second half of the campaign couldn't have got off to a better start for Real Madrid as the Whites overcame Real Sociedad at the Bernabéu to cap off a perfect matchday which saw them extend their lead over their nearest pursuers. Despite having played a game less, Madrid now boast a four-point cushion on Barcelona and Sevilla and are 10 points better off than Atlético.

There were hardly any chances at either end in an extremely hard-fought first half. With 12 minutes on the clock, Lucas Vázquez got away from Rodrigues on the right flank but his cross was hacked away by Raúl Navas on the penalty spot. Four minutes later, the visitors came close themselves when a long-range free-kick from Willian José forced Keylor Navas into action.

Kovacic puts the hosts ahead
The minutes ticked by and neither side was managing to fully dominate proceedings. However, just when it looked as if the sides would be heading in goalless at the break, Cristiano Ronaldo played a fine pass to Kovacic, who slipped the ball under Rulli on 38' to set Madrid on their way.

The second half started off perfectly. Barely five minutes had passed when Real Madrid doubled their lead. The main players involved were the same as for the first goal, but his time the roles were reversed. Kovacic assisted Cristiano Ronaldo on this occasion, who produced a nice finish, chipping the ball over Rulli in the on-on-one. The Portuguese forward has now scored 12 goals in six matches against Real Sociedad at the Bernabéu.

Chances for the hosts
The Whites didn’t sit on their lead as they went in search of a third and it looked like they had got it in the 72nd minute. Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a free-kick and Morata headed the ball home, but the academy graduate’s effort was disallowed for offside. Lucas Vázquez had a chance a minute later after a mistake from Rulli when playing the ball out. The goalkeeper made up for his mistake with a great save, keeping the Spanish international's effort out.

The madridistas were on top and a minute later Real Sociedad were reduced to ten men after the sending off of Íñigo Martínez for a second yellow. The Whites took advantage of the extra man and soon added the third. Lucas Vázquez picked out Morata in the 82nd minute and he headed home to seal victory. This win sees the league leaders extend their advantage at the top.
