Real Madrid - Borussia Dortmund

Benzema: "We wanted to win the game and finish top"

NEWS | 07/12/2016

"We gave them a real game but they got an equaliser on the break", commented Marcelo.
Karim Benzema netted both of Real Madrid's goals against Borussia and he reflected on the draw in the following terms: "It's important for me to score goals, but I'm upset with the result. We wanted to win the game, although we were aware that Borussia are a great side. It was a good game and it was tough going. We lacked a bit of concentration and that's all there is to it. Everyone put in an outstanding performances that were full of effort and pride".

"We were aiming to finishing top, as always, but to win the Champions League it doesn't matter if you finish top of the group or second because ultimately you've got to beat everyone".
Criticism of his displays
"When I hear these things I have to improve and train harder. Playing here is difficult and if I work a lot in training then I will score".

Marcelo: "We have given them a real game"
"We have given them a real game and tried to play football, but we were unlucky as they equalised on the break. Now there are only very strong teams left, that is why they are in the last sixteen. We will wait to see who we play and try to play well in the first leg and again in the second leg”.

Lucas: "We did enough to get the win"
"We had a lot of chances in both the first and second halves but we lacked that bit of luck you need to put the game to bed. We did enough to get the win, but in the end they equalised and we didn’t have time to get another”.

Positive vibes
"I think we had a good game, played with intensity, and it was a shame we didn’t win. We have to be happy with the performance and for the vibes the team is producing. We are Real Madrid and whoever we get in the last sixteen we must go out to win.

Navas: "The team fought hard to win the match"
"The team is on a positive streak and that fills us with confidence. We tried to win the match and the team fought hard, but we must learn from this for what is coming and we know that we must put matches to bed as soon as possible".

Lucas:"We have to be happy with the performance and for the vibes the team is producing".

"Everyone who makes it to this stage deserves to be here and will be difficult opponents. If they are in the last sixteen it is because they deserved to be there and have played well. We never think about finishing second, we always try to win and our goal is to be first in everything"

Zidane's 50th game
"We're really happy with him, he knows how to lead a group and we're working well together. I hope that he's here for many more games and that we keep on winning".

Carvajal: "The game leaves us with a bittersweet taste"
"Dortmund are a young and quick side and it's to be expected that we were made to suffer in the transitions. Today's match leaves us with a bittersweet taste. We had the chances to have put the game to bed at various points, but the draw leaves us with a bitter taste in our mouths. We may get a strong or weak side in the draw, but we're through to the last 16 and nobody will want to come up against us".

"He's getting us to work hard and is ensuring that everything goes well and that's reaping its rewards with this 34-game unbeaten run. Everyone in the squad only has words of praise for him and he's achieving big things here. Let's hope that he stays on for many more years and lifts a lot of silverware".

Casemiro: "We had the chances to have killed it off"
"We knew that we were playing against a good side and we had the chances to have killed it off. We head home angry because Real Madrid must always finish top. We played really well, we remain unbeaten, but this is football and we must be aware which areas we're currently performing well and poorly in".

"I felt good out there, it had been a long time since I'd started a game with this intensity and now I have to get into the rhythm. Kroos also returned today and he's important for us. We've got a great squad and when someone's out injured the others come in and do a good job and that's good news for Real Madrid".

"Today he proved that he's the best number 9 in the world, we trust in him and it's good for him that he put in such a great performance".
