Cristiano Ronaldo in the running for Laureus award

He has been pre-selected in the Sportsman of the Year category.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been pre-selected for the 2014 Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award. The Portuguese star, who scooped the FIFA Ballon d'Or last week, could become the first footballer to receive the accolade, which will be presented on 15 April. The pre-selection of Cristiano Ronaldo joins that of Real Madrid, contenders in the World Team of the Year category, and James, who is in the race for the World Breakthrough of the Year prize.

The identities of the six final nominees will be announced on 11 February. Among the Madrid forward's competitors for the award are Márquez (MotoGP); Messi; Lewis Hamilton (Formula 1); Rory McIlroy (golf); Renaud Lavillenie (pole vault); Zhang Jike (table tennis); Jonny Wilkinson (rugby); Kohei Uchimura (gymnastics); Chad le Clos (swimming); Floyd Mayweather (boxing); Manny Pacquiao (boxing); Kevin Durant (basketball) and Vincenzo Nibali (cycling).
