“I'm close to getting back with the team and that motivates me to keep fighting”, said the Real Madrid midfielder.
Sami Khedira is in the final stages of his recovery after he underwent a successful operation on the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments of his right knee on 16 November. After an initial period in Augsburg and Ciudad Real Madrid, the Madrid midfielder is continuing his rehabilitation, now in southern Sicily. "I feel more like a footballer now, because being here, on a football field, is like being home again. I can sense that I'm reaching the end of it, I'm close to getting back to the team and that motivates me to keep fighting", he admitted.

"It was tough at the beginning. I think the first four or five weeks were the most difficult. I was on crutches and couldn't walk... I was very limited. In recent weeks I've been training more comfortably on my knee. I'm really happy to be back on the turf, with the ball and running around outside. I have more confidence in my knee now, and I also feel more secure. I'm well".

I'm very happy with how my knee has progressed and I'm going to keep working. The goal is to come back better than before.

"The Real Madrid medical team is very good. I trust the people I've been working on my recovery with. I've known them for six or seven years, and that makes the work we do easier. After an injury and so much concentration, normally you come back stronger. You can work on your faults and on the things you do well to do them even better"

His relationship with the squad and the team's objectives
"I miss the team, my team-mates, the manager... It's tough training on your own every day. It's important for me to stay in touch with my team-mates and the boss, it makes everything easier. It's a pleasure having team-mates like them. They're great people with big hearts. We have the opportunity to win three titles. Especially in the Champions League, all the Madrid fans want us to win, and we want it more than anyone, for sure".

The views of Dr Olmo, the Sanitas-Real Madrid Medical Services
"We're really happy with Sami. Since the beginning he has worked eight hours a day visualising his recovery and the results he has had until now are because of his daily work. The aim is to get him to finish his footballing career without any problems. We don't want to risk that just so he can play a bit earlier or a bit later".
"We have designed a recovery plan for him, which we have followed closely, in four stages plus a fifth one, which is with the team. He still has to finish the fourth. When we're sure he has 100% of his muscle strength and control of the knee we'll be able to decide whether he can train with the team".
