Two European Cups for one of the original dominant centers

Bob Burgess was one of the first three foreign players ever to join Real Madrid alongside Clifford Luyk and Bill Hanson. Saporta signed him from the NBA's New York Nicks, together with Luyk, ahead of the 1963-64 season. The American was involved in the basketball team's first two European Cup victories. In the 1964 success, his defense in the return leg of the final up against Spartak Brno's star man Jan Bobrowski, was crucial as the team came from behind at the Frontón Arena.

One year on, in 1965, against the mighty TSKA Moscow, he forced the third and decisive encounter with a tip-in which gave the team the win on Russian soil. Burgess was a hugely imposing center for the era, wreaking havoc in the opposition paint throughout the 60s. He was also hugely important in the 1964 and 1965 league wins. Alongside Clifford Luyk, he formed one of the best center duos of the time.
