Rodrygo was on target for Madrid, who hit the crossbar and deserved more against City.
Real Madrid slipped to defeat against Manchester City at the Bernabéu. The hosts started brightly and, just after kick-off, referee Clément Turpin awarded a penalty for a foul by Vini Jr. on Matheus Nunes, but after consulting with the VAR official, he ruled that the infringement had taken place outside the area. The Brazilian was in the thick of the action again seven minutes later. A wonderful pass from Rodrygo from one side of the pitch to the other found his compatriot, who was slightly off balance and narrowly missed the target with Donnarumma already beaten.
As the game wore on, Xabi Alonso's side took the lead just before the half-hour mark. Carreras won the ball back in his own half and launched a swift counter-attack, with Gonzalo involved and Bellingham providing the assist for Rodrygo to fire past Donnarumma with a precise shot across goal. The 1-0 lead did not last long, as Manchester City equalised from a set piece in the 35th minute after a header from Gvardiol was parried by Courtois, who had been gripped by the arm by Bernardo Silva, and O'Reilly took advantage of the rebound in front of goal.
Controversy
And just when it looked like the first half would end with the score level, Turpin, alerted by VAR, went to the monitor and awarded a penalty for a challenge by Rüdiger on Haaland, the Norwegian striker converting in the 42nd minute. In added time, Madrid appealed for a penalty for a foul by Gvardiol on Asencio, and in the counterattack, Courtois had to intervene twice to save shots from Haaland inside the area and Bernardo Silva after the rebound. The second half also commenced at a frantic pace and Bellingham had the chance to equalise after five minutes. Carreras recovered the ball in his own area, beat two opponents and passed to Vini Jr. He then passed to Rodrygo and the Brazilian slipped in the Englishman and when one-on-one with the visiting goalkeeper, his lofted effort sailed over the bar. A minute later, Cherki shot from inside the area, the ball hit Asencio and Courtois showed his reflexes to save firmly.
Endrick hits the crossbar
The minutes elapsed and the Whites pressed forward in search of an equaliser, which almost came in the 77th minute when Rodrygo crossed and Vini Jr.'s header went wide. Three minutes later, Güler took a corner, Donnarumma got a touch on the ball as he came out and the Brazilian's shot at the far post flashed over the bar. An even clearer chance came for Real Madrid in the 85th minute. Carreras crossed and Endrick's header crashed off the crossbar. From then until the end, Xabi Alonso's side were in constant attack and merited a late equaliser.
