Amancio played for Real Madrid for the first time 62 years ago. The match was a European Cup tie against Anderlecht at the Santiago Bernabéu (3-3). Amancio played up front in that match alongside fellow club legends such as Di StefanoGento and Puskas. The Galician player joined the club in the summer of 1962 at the age of 22, after playing for Deportivo de La Coruña.

Amancio's first league game as a Madridista was even more impressive, as the Whites won 5-2 away against Betis and he was among the scorers. This was the start of a legendary career at Real Madrid, which saw him play 14 seasons and score 155 goals in 471 games. During this time he became a star of world football and as a Madridista he won a European Cup (he scored a magnificent goal in the final the Sexta), nine La Liga titles and three Copa de España trophies.

Honorary club president
After his successful playing career, Amancio also became a coach at the club. As Castilla coach, he accomplished the biggest milestone in the history of the academy side: being crowned champions of the Segunda División. He spent one season in charge of the first team, when he helped to shape the group of players who would go on to form the Quinta del Buitre. In recognition of his career, on 2 October 2022, he was elected honorary president of Real Madrid, a position he held until his death on 21 February 2023.
