Real Madrid remain unbeaten against Bàsquet Girona and are the only unbeaten team in the competition.
Real Madrid convincingly beat Bàsquet Girona on the road in the clash between the unbeaten teams in the league and become the sole leaders with four wins and no defeats. Chus Mateo's side, coming off the back of a huge effort 48 hours ago in their triumphant Euroleague opener, utilised their depth of squad to put an end to Girona's unbeaten run. Dominating the game from the start with a fine balance between defence and offence, they restricted their opponents to 19 points less than their average and scored 15 three-pointers for the second game in a row. Campazzo and Poirier 19 led seven players in double digit scoring. Seventh consecutive win and a perfect start to the campaign.
Coming straight from Vitoria, the madridistas were facing a difficult start in the league. The home team tried to play with a lot of pace from the start, but Madrid were in control of their rebounding. A key aspect that enabled them to run and score on the counter-attack. They combined this with two three-pointers to lead from the fourth minute onwards and reach a maximum of +7 in the first quarter, brought to a close by Ndiaye with a three-pointer and a salute to the sky on his return to the team 17-23, min.10.
A very solid Madrid at the back
Chus Mateo's team's defence was also operating very well. There were few cracks, resulting in turnovers for Bàsket Girona and also reducing their three-point shooting percentages. The second best offence was down to 11 points in the second quarter. They were struggling to score while Madrid, with Poirier controlling the play from the high post, were making threes. Four in a row, including two from Hezonja, who stood out as our team's offensive spearhead 8 points in this quarter, propelled the team, who took complete control of the game and increased their lead to 20 points at 25-45 in the 20th minute.
Madrid were unstoppable. The home side got better in offence but came up against a spectacular third-quarter offensive display from Chus Mateo's men. 33 points were scored at a very high level, with Poirier dominating the paint and hitting three-pointers with ease. Seven of them scored in this 10 minute period. Abalde and Yabusele opened it with two identical three-pointers, followed by September's MVP Musa, who hit back-to-back threes, another by Sergio Rodríguez and the icing on the cake was Llull on the buzzer to make it +26 52-78.
Second away win
With the game firmly under control, Madrid's intensity eased off a little and Bàsquet Girona were able to rack up points with greater ease in the final quarter to reduce the +30 difference at 32 minutes 52-82. The 120-76 valuation tells the whole story. Our team scored 15 three-pointers, as many as in Vitoria last Friday, to keep their unbeaten record this season 74-93, min.40. Next up, this Tuesday, a basketball celebration at the WiZink Center with the visit of Doncic's Dallas Mavericks 8.45pm CEST.
