Victory away to Asvel
MATCH REPORT.Edu Bueno

Real Madrid picked up their 12th EuroLeague win at Asvel Villeurbanne. Scariolo 's men beat the French side in their first outing of 2026, in a game they had to come from behind with a superb last quarter of defence, where they posted an 8-24 run with a decisive Lyles in attack (12 of his 21 points) and a strong defence led by GarubaTavares (12 points, 9 rebounds and 25 in PIR) and Campazzo (15 and 16) carried the team in the first three quarters. On Thursday, they face Maccabi Tel Aviv in the EuroLeague (8:45 pm CET).

It was an even start to the first quarter with Madrid taking the initiative for more than seven minutes with a solid defence, the strong presence of Tavares and an attack spearheaded by Campazzo and Lyles (5 points apiece). It was with the absence of the Cape Verdean centre and the introduction of point guard Watson that Asvel were able to loosen up more and managed an 8-2 run, which closed the period with an 18-17 lead on the scoreboard.

Campazzo and Tavares drive Madrid forward
The home side continued to dominate in the following minutes through the second options generated on the bounce and a highly physical defence. Heurtel, Harrison and Massa increased the difference to 9 points on several occasions. Campazzo (12 points at half-time) and Tavares (8 in this quarter) kept Madrid, who went 5 down at the end of the first half (41-36, min.20).

Madrid struggled with their lack of accuracy in attack. They were moving the ball well and finding comfortable shots, but they were not going in. Asvel played with the confidence of being on top. They enjoyed a 10-point lead at the start of the third quarter (48-38, min.33). Scariolo's team began to get into an offensive groove. Triples from Campazzo and Okeke, and the emergence of Maledon, tightened the scoreboard. However, the French side always responded with a three-pointer. This back-and-forth maintained the +5 advantage for the home side heading into the final stretch (61-56, min.30).

Defence and Lyles pave the way to victory
Madrid upped their defensive intensity in the final quarter with the introduction of Feliz at shooting guard and Garuba at the five. The power forward brought his usual energy and outplayed his peers. Our team was much more convincing and tougher at the back, they closed down the rebounding and were able to run. It had a direct effect on the attack, which was sparked by a sensational Lyles who, with 12 consecutive points, gave a recital and led an 8-24 run in a strong last 10 minutes for the team (69-80, min.40).
