Guti's Under-19 side have made their competition debut in record-breaking style in the UEFA Youth League, against an APOEL team who barely got a touch of the ball for the full 90 minutes. The home fans were treated to an exhibition at the Di Stéfano, enjoying a first-half hat-trick from Dani Gómez, who struck three times from three attempts on goal. The Whites now sit atop group H, level on points with Tottenham, who overcame Borussia Dortmund.
Guti's men took eighteen minutes to open the scoring, dominating the clash from beginning to end. Dani Gómez got the first, sending the ball flying into the back of the net from outside the area to pave the way for a comprehensive thrashing. With 25 minutes gone, the forward repeated the trick, smashing in a Zabarte cross from the right-hand side. A well struck De la Fuente free-kick was deflected off the APOEL wall on 32’, with Paraskevas helpless to stop the third goal. It would be 5 before the break though, with Miguel Baeza and then Dani Gómez each netting from the penalty spot.
The Cypriot outfit looked to stem the tide in the second 45 minutes, but ultimately it would be more of the same, with Guti's men relentless in their assault. Defensive fragility was clear once again just 4 minutes after the restart, as Zabarte snuck in to head home from inside the six-yard box. Pedro then got in on the act, also with his head, turning home a corner at the near post.
The striker from Seville, who had only come on at half-time, then netted two more in quick succession to complete his hat-trick in barely fifteen minutes. By this time, APOEL were in absolute disarray but the Under-19s refused to let up. Miguel Baeza made it a round ten to bring up a record scoreline for the Whites, (previously 6-0) and their best ever home win in the UEFA Youth League.
