Emilio Butragueño, Real Madrid's director of Institutional Relations, has discussed the Champions League semi-final draw which has thrown up a clash between the Whites and Atlético Madrid. “We know each other very well, it's the fourth season in a row that we've faced Atlético in the Champions League. They are very tough opposition, who defend brilliantly and are very solid”.
“We're happy to have made it to the semi-finals after such a difficult knock-out tie against Bayern. We're still one step away, the most difficult one, but we're going to do all we can to get to the final that all madridismo is dreaming of”.
Run of form
“Atlético are in great shape and so are we. That said, there are still three games to come in LaLiga before the first leg, but I think both teams will go into the tie strongly. The competition is so prestigious, so important, that it spurs the players on to give their all in order to achieve the goal, which is to make it to the final".
"They will be two hard-fought, extremely intense games. Atlético give you no respite and we're going to have faith in the players that have got us this far and have given us so much to celebrate already”.
Second leg at the Calderón
“I don't know if it's an advantage. Playing the second leg at home could perhaps give you a slight edge but that depends on the result of the first game. We'll have to be very strong here in order to have a good result to defend at the Calderón. The team will have to play two great games and if they do that then of course we'll have a fantastic chance”.
“Every year and every game is different. Atlético Madrid capitalise extremely well on their opponent's mistakes because they've got real quality up top and then they're very solid at the back. They don't concede many goals and these kinds of knock-out ties can almost be decided on one play. So the concentration levels must be perfect and nobody can afford to make mistakes because you end up paying for them dearly”.
