NEWS | 18/03/2017 | Antonio M. Leal“It is important to be top of the table before the international break", stated the Brazilian, who now sits 20th in the club's all-time appearance rankings.
Marcelo played a full 90 minutes against Athletic at San Mamés and is now amongst the 20 madridistas who have played the most LaLiga games. The Brazilian has now equalled the 284 games that Juanito played for the club between 1977 and 1987. Marcelo took just ten years to manage this feat, having won LaLiga three times and scoring 20 goals in the competition.
At the end of the game in Bilbao, the Brazilian spoke about the club's situation in LaLiga: “All we think about is that we must keep on getting the points and we don't think about any advantage we have over the rest. We will keep working away and it is important to be top of the table before the international break”.
“Playing here is always difficult. Athletic move the ball around well and know how to defend. We had time to prepare the game this week, we did what the coach told us and we got the win. We are closing in on the final part of the LaLiga season and we know that is will be very, very tough”.
“Casemiro has grown spectacularly. He works so hard and it’s a privilege to play alongside him here and with the national team. He’s one of the best centre midfielders in the world”.
The list of players with most LaLiga appearances for Real Madrid is headed by Raúl (550), Sanchís (523) and Casillas (510). The players still in front of Marcelo on the list are legendary names in the history of the club and next in his sights are Velázquez (301), Benito (317) and Zoco (318). In terms of foreign players, Marcelo sits second in the list behind only Roberto Carlos (370).
