Sergio Llull is a Real Madrid symbol. The Menorcan arrived at the club in 2007 in time for the playoffs, having been endorsed by Joan Plaza. He quickly found himself a spot on the team and in the hearts of Madrid’s fans, thanks to his sharpness and nerve. Since then he has been an indispensable element in Madrid’s and the Spanish national side’s achievements, having won with the latter Eurobasket 2009 and 2011.
His characteristics are a perfect match with the style of play implemented by Pablo Laso. His quick and potent legs enable him to be very damaging in counterattacks and end-to-end transitions. In static play he can also punish rival teams with his fearsome three-point shot (43% success rate during the 2012/13 season).
Throughout his career in Madrid Llull has alternated between the positions of point guard and shooting guard, depending on the style and needs of each group. One of his most decisive moments as a Madrid player took place during the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona in 2012. That day Sergio blitzed. He scored 23 points (with 5 three-pointers from 7 attempts) that were crucial in winning the title. He was deservingly named MVP.
