18 seasons defending the Real Madrid goal

Position: Goalkeeper
Games played: 346
Spanish international: 18 caps

Two of Miguel Ángel's greatest strengths were his consistency and quality over the 18 seasons that he was in goal for Real Madrid. These characteristics established him as one of the best goalkeepers in the history of Spanish football. In addition, the 14 national and 2 European trophies he won made him a club legend.

His first forays into the world of sport were as a handball goalkeeper. Nicknamed El Gato (The Cat) due to his reflexes, Miguel Ángel started playing football at the age of 18. He was playing for Ourense when he was noticed by the Madrid coaches who signed him. He fought for the position during the first few seasons with two great goalkeepers of the stature of Junquera and Betancort..

During the 1973-74 season, with Luis Molowny on the bench, Miguel Ángel got the chance he was waiting for. His brilliant performances (he won the Zamora Trophy in 75/76) saw him become an undisputed starter and helped the team win the league eight times. Miguel Ángel made 18 appearances for the Spanish national team. He passed away on 6 February 2024.
