NEWS | 02/03/2014 | Javier García“We tried to play but it wasn't easy because Atlético played a very rough game, and when we started to do so we had lots of chances”, said the Real Madrid manager.
Real Madrid and Atlético were involved in the biggest game of the 26th matchday of the Liga and Carlo Ancelotti said about the match: "We drew a game that we were losing. The response was good and overall we can be satisfied because Atlético are a good team, particularly at home. We're top and that's good. Now we have seven games at home and five away.
"A point is a point. It was a difficult match. We tried to play but it wasn't easy because Atlético played a very rough game. In the end it was very good, and when we started to play we had a lot of chances. They tried to impose a violent game. We don't play like that. We tried to play and in the end we did it".
Team improves in the second half
“They found it harder to defend because we changed our game on the left and right and played with patience. In the first half we weren't capable or patient. Plus, Atleti were a bit tired and didn't press as much”. On the two goals conceded in the first half he said: “After Benzema's goal we lost the ball very easily, we didn't have possession of the ball and Atlético turned the match around”.
The starting eleven and the change of wingers
“Some people might think I got it wrong. The match was very difficult and the response from the players in the second half was very good. The response we have to give when a team comes at us like that is to play our game. In the second half we did well”. With reference to the wingers he said: “Coentrão and Arbeloa were fresh because they hadn't played on Wednesday. Then, when we needed to apply more pressure up front, I made the changes”.
On the referee's decision and what he asked him he said: “At the end of the match I just asked him how much time he added. I think the referee did a good job, it wasn't easy for him”.
“It was an electrifying match. In the first half Atlético pressed very well. The match was being played more or less in the area of the field where they wanted it and we suffered a lot. They scored at the end of the first half, but in the second half, as the game progressed, we took control of the situation. We took possession of the ball and we could have won”.
The director of institutional relations also analysed the opponents. “Atlético are a very competitive side, with a lot of character, and they were at home. They had the whole week to prepare for the derby and it cost us. They closed down the space well. In the second half we got into the game more and created more chances. There was a very dangerous header from Cristiano and a good chance for Benzema”.
The changes and the refereeing
"The manager thought that we could have depth out wide and the two that came on were more attacking, they created more chances on goal"."In Gabi's incident, hands are hands. It hits Gabi's hands. The referee can interpret it however he wants, but it hit his hands. Sergio's incident with Costa was a tussle, nothing more, and the second, Arbeloa's, was the same. A tussle, nothing more. There's nothing there".
