ファビオ・カンナバーロは疑いの余地なく、世界でも屈指のセンターバック選手の一人である。先を読む能力、攻撃性、ポテンシャル、ボール操作能力を持ち合わせ、統率力にも優れている。
1992年、彼のアイドル、チロ・フェラーラのいる故郷のクラブ、ナポリでデビュー。しかしながら、キャリアの大部分をパルマ(1995-2002)で過ごすことになる。そのパルマで、リリアン・テュラム、GKジャンルイジ・ブッフォンとともにイタリアサッカーの脅威のディフェンス陣を形成し、UEFA杯、イタリアカップ2回、イタリア・スーパーカップを制覇する。パルマで成功を収めた後、インテルへ移籍しそこで2シーズンを過ごす。
2004年には、イタリアの別のビッグチーム、ユベントスへ。そこでカペッロ監督の手腕の下、再びテュラム、ブッフォンと守備陣を組む。数々の個人賞を受賞し、ワールドカップを制したカンナバーロに足りないのは、チャンピオンズリーグタイトルだけだと自ら公言している。それがレアル・マドリードへ移籍した主な理由でもある。
イタリア代表選手としては、ユース時代から活躍を見せている。1994年と1995年のU-21欧州選手権で優勝を飾り、アトランタ・オリンピックにも参加している。彼の代表デビュー戦は1997年、北アイルランドとの対戦で2-0の勝利を収め、その時からずっと代表選手として出場し続けている。100キャップを達成したのは、2006年ワールドカップ、フランスとの決勝戦だった。イタリアで彼以上のキャップ数を誇るのは、パオロ・マルディーニ(126)とディノ・ゾフ(112)だけである。
