Real Madrid are known throughout the world for their sporting triumphs, but less is known about their corporate activities, one of which is the Club's respect for the environment. Both the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and Real Madrid City at Valdebebas have eco-friendly devices in their facilities.
CLEAN SPOT: Real Madrid undertake an integral management of residues, which are compiled, treated and sent off to recycling plants. Elements such as paper, batteries, glass, organic residue, electronic and electric equipment, and medical products are all recycled. The Club has different containers located in the exterior patio of the multi-use building at Real Madrid City that are managed individually for the management of residue. Real Madrid have signed several agreements and contracts with recycling companies and are registered in the Environmental Council of the Government of Madrid as a small producer of residue. Organic residues from gardening, as well as oils and fuel liquids from the machinery at Valdebebas are also recycled. An Integral Plan for Residual Management is being planned for the future.
PURIFIER: Real Madrid City has a Water Purifier that recycles fecal and rain water to be used by the sprinkler system.
ICE PRODUCTION: Real Madrid have a facility for the production of ice. It runs at night time, when prices are lower. Ice is stored in 4,000 kWh tanks and used during the day for the air conditioning of the several buildings at Valdebebas.
SOLAR PANELS: Real Madrid have 180 m2 of thermal solar energy panels. They provide 62% of the hot water used in Real Madrid City's dressing rooms. This is an annual figure given that they suplly 100% of said water during summer and only 30% during winter (some 114,762 Mcal.). The panels are remote controlled, exacting temperature, the amount of solar radiation, exchange temperatures and alarms. The Club is studying the possibility of installing solar photovoltaic energy facilities in the future, as well as establishing a natural gas supply for Valdebebas. The four boilers at Real Madrid City currently work with diesel oil and in sequence depending on how much heat is needed; this amounts to large savings in energy production.
WEATHER STATION: This controls a series of parameters -wind speed and intensity, humidity, temperature and rainfall- in order for work carried out at Valdebebas to be efficient. For example, this system automatically stops all sprinklers on a rainy day in order to save water. The Bernabéu also has a weather station that measures wind force to control the heating of the stands, which is gas-based and stops automatically if the wind is too strong as a security measure.
