Casillas: "Each chapter made me reminisce about my life and the more I read the more moved I became"

Alberto Navarro / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

The Realmadrid Foundation presented the book Iker Casillas. La humildad del campeon (Iker Casillas. A champion's humility) amidst great anticipation today in the Presidential Balcony of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The act was attended by President Florentino Perez, Honorary President Alfredo di Stefano, author Enrique Ortego, the Foundation's Executive Vice President Enrique Sanchez, Everest Publishing Director General Sandra Lopez, and Iker Casillas himself.

"It isn't easy to remain humble and hungry for titles after one wins everything Casillas has," said Perez in his introduction, "He is the best goalkeeper in this country's and Real Madrid's history. Thank you for your devotion and loyalty to the club. We have more titles, dreams and challenges to achieve, and it will be easier with your help."

"Iker, thank you for opening for me the doors to your memory and to your infinite heart," said Ortego, "Your are the captain of captains and the 420 pages of this book aren't enough to describe someone who has won so much an experienced such unbelievable things. The life of Casillas is well summarised in the title of this book: 'a champion's humility'."

"Iker has the record number of caps with Spain," added Perez, "and his carreer is excellence itself. His personality makes him one of the most beloved footballers in the world. That's why he's won the Champions League title for affection."

Under the watchful eye of teammates Granero, Callejon, Adan; former colleagues such as Bodo Illgner; Director of Institutional Relations Emilio Butragueño and Football Director Miguel Pardeza; the President explained "Casillas is a symbol for children, which is a great responsibility to have."

Visibly moved, Iker expressed his thanks for such support. "Thank you for your kind words and introduction, Florentino. I'm surrounded by my natural and Madridista family here. I didn't really understand why a book about me should be written because I'm still active and believed my merits should be written in newspapers, not a book, but I am delighted with the results."
