Real Madrid, playing in their new away kit for the first time, ended their European tour with a deserved victory against PSG in their third match of the preseason and remain undefeated. Benzema finished off a textbook counterattack in the 23rd minute and sealed the Real Madrid win in an exciting match that should have had more goals, with both teams creating chances. Tomorrow, the Whites travel to the USA with the results and the way they’ve played in the opening preseason matches as backing, having kept a clean sheet in two of them.
Real Madrid played in this season’s new away kit for the first time in the third and last match before travelling to the USA. It was a very demanding test. In fact, they were facing the defending Ligue 1 champions, who also have 15 days more of preseason training behind them. The match began in exciting fashion with chances for both teams. The Whites were the first to shoot at goal. Following Ronaldo and Isco’s off target shots in the 12thand 14th minutes respectively, Benzema’s shot was stopped by Sirigu in the 16th minute following some great team play.
It was the Frenchman who put his team ahead with his first of the preseason. The French international's goal came from a textbook counterattack that started from a PSG corner. The move was started by Ronaldo, who was stopped with a foul as he passed to Benzema, who in turn, passed to Ozil before the Frenchman himself finished with a low shot threaded into the corner of the net that Sirigu at full stretch could do nothing about in the 23rd minute. The match did not change as a result of the goal. PSG had chances to equalise (Lavezzi had the clearest in the 39th minute) and Real Madrid had the chance to increase the lead (Benzema could have had his second in the 42nd minute), but there were no more goals in a first half in which the Ullevi Stadium crowd had enjoyed the football being played by both teams.
The second half started in the same way, with attractive and intense football. Neither Real Madrid nor PSG held back and the chances came one after the other. Before the first ten minutes of the half were finished, the Whites had two clear chances. Di Maria, who had replaced Isco, had the first in the 53rd minute, but his shot was pushed wide for a corner by Sirigu. The second came from the corner. The Argentine took the corner kick and Ronaldo, imperious in the air, shot with a header that forced the French team’s goalkeeper to shine. It seemed like the Whites were beginning to take control of the match and they had another opportunity to extend the lead three minutes later. Sirigu again saved his team from a shot by Ronaldo, who was the most involved Real Madrid player at the start of the second half and could have scored again in the 62nd minute with a shot from the edge of the box.
There was just under half an hour remaining and Blanc, who had not made any changes, brought on Verratti, Thiago Silva and Ongenda. Fresh legs to try to turn around the scoreline. Despite that, Real Madrid still created chances and Ozil, in the 70th minute, nearly got the second. Kaka, with a shot from the edge of the area, could also have done so in the 82nd minute. It was not needed. The Whites, who finished with a clean sheet, as they did in the first match of the preseason, earned a deserved win and ended their European tour unbeaten.
