The target of qualification has been achieved. Not with a win but, at the end of the day, it has been achieved. Real Madrid have reached the last sixteen of the Champions League. Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo, two of the star players of the game, gave their thoughts on this at the end of the match. The Portuguese was clear: “The referee could have been better. But we are working to win the European Cup and we are hopeful that we can achieve it. That is our aim”. As for Sergio Ramos, he said: “You always like to win, but the aim was to qualify and that is what we have done”.

Real Madrid return to the Spanish capital assured of qualification following a game in Manchester which left a slightly bitter taste in the mouth. Cristiano Ronaldo stated after the game that “the referee could have been better. We were in the most difficult group and Dortmund are having a great Champions League campaign. A draw was enough for qualification. We worked hard, this will be a very tough competition and we are hopeful that we can have a good year. That is our aim. We are working to win the European Cup and we are hopeful that we can achieve it. That is our aim”.

As for Real Madrid's vice-captain, he did not swerve the issue of the controversial penalty either. “I would have to see it again, but from what we've been told, the penalty is far from clear-cut. We don't like to speak about referees but it is true that the referee's performance affected the second half we had. Sometimes they help you out and other times they set you back, it's a total lottery. We should have gone into the break further ahead, and we had our chances, but that's football”, explained Ramos.

The defender was frank in his assessment and was clear that he would have preferred a win although he recognised that qualification was the aim: "You always like to win and we would like to have qualified with a win. But the most important thing is that we are through. Although it is true that we would like to have qualified as group winners. But we have to recognise that we have done what we set out to do".
