José Mourinho analysed his team’s victory against Levante in the press room at the Ciudad de Valencia stadium. The Whites’ coach praised his team’s effort and the “important” victory that they earned: “It was a difficult match for everyone. We have adapted to the conditions and it was an honest fight between two honest teams that have given their all in search of the result. The team has had to play with great character and strength and we deserved to win. I hadn't won here before and they are three extremely important points”.
The Portuguese also spoke of the formation he used and his team’s reaction after the equaliser: “We played 4-4-2 because we knew that the pitch wouldn't allow us to play football and it would be more direct with lots of second moves. Normally in these matches the team to score first wins. In the end we had to score twice to win. They reacted and equalised. Without Cristiano Ronaldo it was more difficult. Callejón and Di María played fantastically as forwards and then “el niño” (Morata) came on to score with his first touch and we won the three points”.
When asked about the adverse conditions on the pitch he stated: “For all those who have played football, well or badly, as children it was a party when you played in the rain and I think people enjoy it to a certain extent. A more technical team and the referee find it more difficult, also the spectators because it’s cold and it’s raining. It’s still football and you need to adapt how you play. Levante played the way they wanted to, they fought hard and made the game difficult for us”.
The Portuguese praised Morata, scorer of the winning goal: “He deserves the praise, not me. My praise comes from helping him grow, training him and not letting him go to another team like Mata or Negredo. I brought him into the first team, no one else. I brought him for three successive seasons. I told the club to give him a first team contract and to not let him leave this year. We have Higuaín and Benzema and when they don’t play Morata will. What others say for me doesn’t matter, what’s important is that he’s growing as a player and as a person because his life is changing by becoming part of the first team. You report the matches in which he is not selected or does not play, but he has now played three matches, he’s played in the Cup and made his debut in the Cup last year. “El niño” (Morata) is very stable mentally and I hope that remains the case after he has read what will be published in the days to come”.
With regard to the penalty on Callejón and the referee, Mourinho was clear: “The penalty is clear, without a doubt. The referee, in my opinion, has had a great game. If he has made a mistake it was because of the linesman, who made a mistake for the Levante goal because it is offside. Good work by the referee and Levante. The people who saw the match at the stadium and at home have not seen a game of quality, but an honest fight between two honest teams that have given their all in search of the result”.
Regarding Cristiano Ronaldo, who was substituted during the break, and the blow he received in the second minute of the match, he said: “He’s dizzy. In the first half he was unable to see properly with that eye, but during the break he couldn't see properly with either. So it was impossible for him to continue. When he gets to Madrid he’ll go to hospital to have the tests he needs”.
