José Callejón talked about Real Madrid’s debut in the Copa de Rey this Wednesday against Alcoyano in their El Collao ground (22:00, Canal + 1). The midfielder avoided being overconfident despite facing an opponent from the Second Division B: “It will be tricky, but we are Real Madrid and we have to go out to win at any ground and in any competition”. The player, who came through the ranks at Real Madrid, also said in an interview for the Bwin web page that “the team is very close and we all have a lot of trust in the players around us”.

Callejón is in his second season with Real Madrid and is taking every opportunity to underline his commitment to the club which has seen him develop as a player: “I have always been a Madrid supporter. Ever since I was little I have followed Madrid. I grew up in the youth team and I have been fortunate enough to be able to return to the first team. And I always say the same thing: I am a Madrid fan. These colours mean a lot to me and I will always give everything to defend this badge because it means so much to me”.

His niece calls him Titogol – uncle goal – a title he earned last season with his 15 goals, a figure he hopes to beat this season, although his aims are more than just scoring goals: “I want to contribute a lot of things to the team. Scoring is always important but it is more important to go out and help the team and to be in good shape when the coach needs you”.

Real Madrid travel to Alcoy this Wednesday in their first journey of the Copa del Rey. Callejón summed up the team’s mind-set going into every competition, regardless of which one it is or who the opposition are: “The cup is another competition. We are playing for Real Madrid and our aim is to fight for every title that is available. In the Cup, just like in all the other competitions, we will give it everything we have. The team are very close and we all have a lot of trust in the players around us. The main thing is to have that trust and closeness so we can perform in matches”.

The Madrid squad are aware of what playing against Real Madrid means and so are expecting Alcoyano to be extra motivated: “I want to win, whether it is by just one goal or more. For them it is an incentive. They are playing Real Madrid, playing the best side and it will definitely be hard. But it is like I always say; we are Real Madrid and we have to go out to win at any ground and in any competition and I always want to win”.

On being asked how he would like the supporters to remember this season, Callejón replied: “I would like them to feel that we have given everything on the pitch in every match and in every training session, that we have fought hard and brought happiness to the fans, and of course that we have won titles”.
