Borussia Dortmund won at home against Ajax Amsterdam in the first match day of the Champions League. The home team had a lot of opportunities to go ahead on the scoreboard, but the outstanding performance of Vermeer, including saving a penalty from Hummels, made the match exciting until the end. Lewandowski’s goal with three minutes remaining sealed the Germans’ victory, leaving Borussia tied with Real Madrid at the top of the group.

Nevertheless, the home side, who had the clearest chances in the match and even managed to miss a penalty on 57 minutes, had to wait until the 87th minute to beat an inspired Vermeer and take a deserved win.
