Tonight Real Madrid faces Manchester City in the first day of the Champions League group stage. The Portuguese coach has had a lot of experience in this domain playing against many English clubs in the UEFA Champions league - the Whites’ coach simply does not know what it is to lose a home game. With 3 wins and 3 draws to date, tonight he’ll be looking to improve on this already positive statistic in the clash against Manchester City.
Mourinho’s first match against an English team in the Champions League was as Porto’s coach in the first knockout round of the 2003-04 season. That game resulted in a 2-1 victory against Manchester City, leading Oporto to glory in the quarter finals. After managing the Red Devils and Chelsea, Liverpool were match rivals for 2 years in a row, who they drew against 0-0 both times.
He also came up against two English teams as manager of Inter Milan, with a 0-0 draw with Manchester United and a 2-1 victory against his former team Chelsea in the first knockout round which was his second consecutive Champions League final. The last precedent set by Mourinho against an English club dates back to the 2010-11 season when back as coach of the Whites he managed a smashing 4-0 victory against Tottenham in the first round of the quarter finals.
