A new Champions League edition starts off for Real Madrid and its captain, Iker Casillas. The goalkeeper will play his fourteenth season of the most important European competition, a historical record for the club, since he will thus match Raúl González as the Real Madrid member in playing the greatest number of seasons. He is also amongst the five-player group with the highest number of seasons in the Champions League history, after Giggs (18), Scholes (17), Gary Neville(15) and Raúl.
Real Madrid captain continues writing his name amongst those of the best players season after season. Thirteen years have already gone by since his first official Champions match on September 15th, 1999 against Olympiakos at Athens Olympic Stadium, when Real Madrid tied three all. Since then, Casillas has played 122 games in 13 seasons, winning two titles (2000 and 2002).
He will start off his fourteenth Champions season defending the white colours against Manchester City, a team he has never faced before, and will thus be on an equal footing with Raúl González, who played 130 matches. If Real Madrid makes it through, at least, the quarter-finals, Casillas will be the player with the greatest number of Champions matches ever played, followed by Guti (13 seasons), Roberto Carlos and Michel Salgado (10) and Helguera (8).
All 14 seasons of the most important European football competition also place Casillas as one of the five players with the greatest number of Champions matches in history, thus surpassing Henry, Beckham, Seedorf and Silvestre, ahead of whom are Gary Neville (15), Scholes (17) and Giggs(18).
