Portugal only just got the better of Luxembourg in the Josy Barthel Stadium by 1-2 and notched up their first victory in the classification stage for the Brazilian World Cup 2014. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the goal that made the draw and led his team in a comeback against the early goal by Daniel da Mota for the home team.Pepe and Coentrao were first-picked players in the Portuguese back.
Paulo Bento started with his best team. With the three Madrid players on the pitch, Portugal did not delay in taking control of the ball. In spite of this dominance , the opportunities for goal did not arrive for lack of aim, above all from their forward Postiga. Nevertheless, it was Luxembourg that went ahead on the scoreboard in the twelfth minute thanks to Daniel da Mota after an out of area shot which went past Rui Patricio.Portugal kept up their rhythm and did not lose steam. The response was not long coming. Cristiano Ronaldo scooped up the ball inside the area in minute twenty-eight and with a strange shot got the better of the local keeper to settle a draw before the interval.
The second half was a Portuguese monologue. Their insistence in front of the goal paid off in minute 54 with the definitive goal by Helder Postiga. A goal which gave relief to the visitors and finished off the hopes of Luxembourg. The Portuguese could have increased the difference, but the local goalkeeper, Joubert , avoided it. Both Pepe and Coentrao did their part in the Portuguese defense, which was only overcome by the first goal on the scoreboard.
