Real Madrid’s two German players, Özil and Khedira, helped their national team to a convincing victory against the Faeroe Islands and the first three points of their World Cup Qualifying Campaign. The White’s number 10 was the star of the match and his two goals once again confirmed him as the leader of his national side. His club team mate Khedira played the whole game putting in an eye-catching performance.
As expected, Germany took the game to their opponents from the off. Their superiority was obvious throughout the entire match, which saw them put Nielsen in the islander’s goal under constant siege. Joachim Löw’s men had no problems in taking the game right to the heart of their rivals’ area rival, but were denied the goal their attacking play deserved. In the 11th minute Özil announced his intensions with Germany’s first clear chance of the game, but the away ‘keeper kept him at bay with a fine save. The German team created at least a dozen chances during the first half, but only Götze’s goal, which he scored in the 28th minute after beating five defenders, separated the sides at the break.
Germany killed the game off in the second half taking full advantage of their tiring opponents. The second goal duly arrived in the 54th minute following a counterattack straight from a Faeroe Island corner. Real Madrid’s Özil collected the clearance and, after combining with Thomas Müller, scored from the edge of the area. At 2-0 and with the game in the bag, the third goal came in the 72nd minute, again scored by Özil only this time following a pass by Marco Reus.
