José Mourinho spoke in the press room after his team’s draw: "When you don’t win you always hope for more. It’s normal. It’s a game similar to last year. You always want to win. There’s no game where you draw and you’re satisfied. To lose this game was difficult, because the opposition hasn’t created chances to score. But you always draw games throughout the season. We drew last season. Last year it was Guaita who was the best player on the pitch and this year it has been Diego. I don’t think we played a great game but we did enough to win".
The Whites enjoyed the best chances to put more goals on the scoreboard but were unable to convert their possession into goals. “The goalkeeper was the best player on the pitch. He made very good and decisive stops. Perhaps if we had played a little better, if we had played like we did in the second half, we would have had more opportunities. Perhaps if the ball had gone in off the post. But football isn’t about maybes. We have drawn and it’s a point for both teams. We played well enough to win but we should have and can play better”, ensured the Whites’ coach.
“Lass has been very good in pre-season. A little better than the rest and we thought it was important to have someone with that intensity. He has trained for 15 more days and didn’t play with his national side this week. Khedira played on Wednesday, and he played hard because his team were reduced to 10 men as a teammate was sent off. He played well. With the draw we wanted risk to win the three points, and the changes were good because the team in the last 30 minutes has played more football and had more opportunities”, he said about the Madrid midfielder’s match and about the team’s second half performance.
Di María was one of the players to be substituted in the match, and Mourinho explained the change. “He’s a little tired, yes. He played a fantastic game last Wednesday, he ran a lot and at this stage it is hard for players to play consecutive matches. It will be easier for them in November. After the pre-season, he has had cramps since minute 60, which is not normal”. Regarding the substitution of Pepe, he clarified: “I’ll worry if he’s not ok. The Spanish Supercup is a match and nothing more. I’m worried about the player”.
The clash was played in high temperatures, but the coach would not say the draw was down to this reason: “We wanted heat during the pre-season because we knew that in Spain it is hot and we would have to play in these temperatures. We played in Las Vegas in higher temperatures, in New York or Philadelphia in a similar temperature, and we have trained in temperatures not much different to that of today. I’m not trying to find excuses. It’s true that lower temperatures are better for playing but everyone has to play in this heat. The decision was already taken to play this weekend and I’m not going to criticise that decision”, clarified Mourinho, who ended the conference saying: “The market is open, any one can come in or leave the club, but I don’t talk about players from other teams”, Mourinho concluded.
