Brazil and Mexico are the two national teams that will compete in the Olympic Games men's football final in London today from 16:00 CET. Marcelo is thus assured his second medal after achieving bronze at Beijing 2008. The Whites' defender has become the eighth player in the history of the club to manage to get through to this final round as a Real Madrid player and fight for gold with his national team.
Marcelo has been in the starting line-up for the five matches that Brazil has played in the tournament, three in the groups phase plus the quarter-final and semi-final matches. With his classification for the clash against Mexico, he's the eighth Real Madrid player to arrive at an Olympic Games final. The first Whites player to do it was Mengotti, with Switzerland, in the match that took place in Paris in 1924, which saw his side go up against Uruguay.
In the 1992 Barcelona Games three players from Real Madrid made it to the final round in which Spain competed against Poland: Luis Enrique, Alfonso and Lasa. Only four years later Geremi and Dorado, the latter from the club's junior ranks, went up against each other in the Sydney final between Cameroon and Spain. The last Real Madrid player to get through to the tournament's final match was the Argentinian Fernando Gago, who played with his national side at Beijing 2008 against Nigeria.
