Ángel Di María has extended his contract with Real Madrid. José Mourinho will have one of the key pieces of the Real Madrid attack available to him until at least the end of the 2017/18 season. Since his signing in the summer of 2010, the Argentine has become one of the fans’ favourites due to his character, physicality and quality. These are qualities that mirror the club’s historical values and that, when converted on the pitch into goals and assists, were vital in the successes in the Copa del Rey 2011 (Spanish Cup, in English) and the 2012 Liga campaign. At 24 years of age, el Fideo begins his third season at the club with more ambition than ever before: “We are going to fight for all the titles”.
He joined Real Madrid on 28 June 2010 after winning the double with Benfica and being proclaimed the best player in the Portuguese league. His speed and physicality on the wings soon won the hearts of the Real Madrid fans. In his debut season, he was one of the players Mourinho used the most, scoring nine goals (six in the Liga and three in the Champions League) and setting up 20 goals. In fact, one of his assists set up the Cristiano Ronaldo header that clinched Real Madrid’s eighteenth Copa del Rey, beating Barcelona 1-0.
Di María hit the ground running in his second season at Madrid. In December, he had already beaten his number of assists from the previous season (14, beating the 11 in 2010/11) and only an injury to the anterior rectus muscle in his right thigh stopped him. However, the Argentine recovered and was in fine form to help the team down the home straight last season, when the team won the Liga with 100 points. He is now about to start his third year in Spain with the skill of a veteran but the same competitive spirit that he is renowned for. He aims to continue honouring the Real Madrid badge and continue the club’s success with more titles.
