Sergio Ramos is in “one of the best periods of my life, both professionally and personally, I want to grow professionally and carry on winning titles”. The Spanish international, who admitted that “you learn a lot from Mourinho”, praised his coach: “He knows a lot about football and on a personal level he teaches you a lot. Good advice makes you grow as a person and having Mourinho in charge is a privilege”.
The defender from Seville did not hide his team’s desire to start a new season that is charged with emotions: “A footballer should always be ambitious and try to win titles every year. We worked really hard last year and now the goal is to defend the league and to start again from scratch humbly. Who better to achieve this than Mourinho, who knows the team inside out and gets the best from each player”.
When asked about the aspects of his team that had improved with regard to last season, Ramos was clear: “You grow over time, both personally and professionally. In each training session, with his philosophy, we understand each other better and we have more confidence thanks to the manager. There are few teams that can counterattack like Real Madrid, and we have improved the team’s level, both in terms of attack and defence”.
When asked about the possibility of winning the Champions League this season, the Real Madrid defender stated: “It’s something I’m yet to win and I feel really good both personally and professionally. This is one of the best periods of my life, both professionally and personally, I want to grow professionally and carry on winning titles. You can’t live in the past in football. We’re starting from scratch and we’re very excited to do so. I have unfinished business with the Champions League and you have to work hard to get to the final. It’s a dream that I am unfamiliar with because I’m yet to experience it”.
His evolution into a central defender was fantastic. Despite this, Ramos follows his coach’s orders and if he is required to play on the wing he’ll be very happy to do so: “For me each year is a challenge. You never know if the team is going to be able to use me in that position again. I’m more decisive in central defence, but I also enjoy playing on the wing and if I have to do it every once in a while it’s a position that I know inside out and I have good memories of playing there”.
The Ballon d’Or and the nominations of his teammates Casillas and Cristiano Ronaldo was another of the topics the Spanish international was asked about: “I don’t know what to say about this topic as there’s no clear criteria when it comes to awarding the Ballon d’Or. It would be fair to award it to a defender or goalkeeper. How can I not award it to Casillas? Only one goalkeeper has won it before, and I would give it to Casillas because you can always count on him as a goalkeeper and as a captain. He’s the best in the world. But at the same time how am I not going to give it to Cristiano Ronaldo? There is no one like him and he makes the difference”.
With regard to Kaká, he only had good things to say about the Brazilian: “I haven’t noticed anything strange about his attitude. He’s a teammate and a friend who has been a member of the squad for some time now. I don’t think he has doubts about his future or anything bad like that. He is professional in every training session and a great footballer. We are all fond of him and support him”.
When asked about the squad and possible signings, he stated: “The team is practically complete. There haven’t been many departures or signings, but we are open to everything. We’ve got a great squad, with amazing footballers, and one or two more will join. It will be easy to adapt. I like football and good footballers and Modric is one of them. He currently doesn’t play in this team and I can’t say any more than that. If he joins he’ll bring something to the team ".
Ramos also spoke about the rivalry with Barcelona and the Spanish Super Cup: “It’s too early to start talking about Barcelona. These last few years they have aspired to win all the titles, just like us, but at the moment I’m focused on my team. The Super Cup is a title and it’s a different experience altogether”.
Finally, he made reference to Sandro Rosell’s comment about the Liga last season being strange: “A few weeks ago I was resting, but if I have to describe our performance in the Liga last season then I would say spectacular and unbelievable because of the amount of goals we scored and the points we won by. I don’t think there was any ill intent behind it, because that would be improper of the Barcelona president”.
