If there was anything that characterised Real Madrid last season it was the ease with which they scored. The do not appear to have lost this knack during the start to their pre-season. They have scored 12 times in their first friendlies against Oviedo, Benfica and Galaxy. This is the best start since 2002, when the team spearheaded by Zidane and Figo scored 14 goals in their first three warm-up games.
Real Madrid has started the season with the same goal-scoring knack with which it finished last season. After beating all the goal-scoring records, José Mourinho’s players have returned from their holidays with their marksmanship fine-tuned and in their first match against Oviedo scored 5 goals. They scored 2 more in their match against Benfica and another 5 in the first match of their American tour against Galaxy, making it 12 in total. The highest goal scorers so far are Di María and Callejón, who have scored three each.
We have to go back as far as 2002 to come across a better start. During that pre-season campaign, the 10-0 victory against Obersteirische alongside the two goals scored in each of the games against Grazer AK and Liverpool, 14 goals were scored in the first three matches. Under Mourinho, Real Madrid scored six goals in 2010 and nine in 2011.
