He came on to the field during the second half at the Carlos Tartiere Stadium and changed the game. In Real Madrid’s first match Ángel di María showed that he has started the new campaign keen to deliver. Against Oviedo, the Argentina gave a lesson in commitment and his powerful physical display and great performance was capped by the two goals that sealed the 5-1 win. It is the first time that he has scored twice in a match since coming to the Whites in the summer of 2010.
The absence of the bulk of the first team from the trip to Oviedo meant that Di María was one of the veterans in the outing, despite it only being his third season at the club. He had to wait until early in the second half to see any action, but it was worth the wait. His two goals demonstrate how well he has started the pre-season. The first goal was a created from his own belief, after sprinting from the midfield and stealing the ball from the home team’s goalkeeper. The second was opportunist, as he latched on to a rebound from close range. In Oviedo the Argentine made his first two goal haul in a white shirt and now has scored 23 goals as a Real Madrid player (16 in competition and 7 in friendlies).
After the match, with the satisfaction of a job well done, Di María did not want put a limit on what the team could achieve this season: "I hope we keep doing better, the target is all three competitions". Ambitious words that speak volumes of the character and spirit that he has and is undoubtedly a great example for the youth academy players that are sharing the dressing room with the first team at the moment.
