The UEFA Euro 2012 Team of the Tournament was announced today, with eight Madridistas on the list: Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Coentrao, Xabi Alonso, Khedira, Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo. Real Madrid is the most represented side in the shortlist.
Casillas lifted the trophy after Spain defeated Italy 4-0 in the final. The goalkeeper only conceded one strike in the entire championship and was thus the least scored upon goalie. Sergio Ramos was also a key figure in Spain's success, giving serious and confident performances in defence and creating good ball movement in many team efforts.
Pepe and Coentrao were fixtures in Portugal's defence. The former scored the opener against Denmark and the latter showcased all his virtues both in defence and attack.
Xabi Alonso, Ozil and Khedira have made the cut as midfielders. The Spaniard scored the two goals against France that gave Spàin a ticket to the semifinals, while the latter two were decisive players for Germany; they both scored too, Ozil from a penalty in the 2-1 defeat against Italy and Khedira in the 4-2 win over Greece.
Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the stars of the tournament, scoring two decisive goals for Portugal in the group stage against the Netherlands (2-1) and netting the winner against the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals (1-0).
