Karim Benzema was presented as Real Madrid's latest signing on 9 July 2009 by President Florentino Perez and Alfredo di Stefano at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. More than 30,000 fans attended the presentation. Three years later, the French footballer has become a key player on the team and one of the best strikers in the world.
Karim arrived at the club when he was just 21 years old from Olympique Lyonnais, with whom he had played five seasons in the Ligue 1. He connected well with his teammates on the pitch and was capable of pulling off difficult efforts. He was the championship's top scorer at 20 and tallied 12 strikes in 19 Champions League encounters.
His first match with Real Madrid was in a victory over Deportivo La Coruña, in which he was a starter. He had previously been the team's top scorer alongside Raul in the preseason friendlies with five goals and tallied his first official strike in Week 3 against Xerez following an impressive step over dribble inside the box.
The Frenchman has since netted 66 goals with the team, needing only three years to improve on the numbers he earned in five campaigns in the Ligue 1. His versatility, association skills, assists, vision, dribbles, movements between lines and goal scoring instincts make him one of the best strikers in the world.
Benzema just had the top scoring season of his career with 32 goals, overtaking Zidane as the top scoring Frenchman in the history of La Liga and Real Madrid. His excellent performances prompted France Football to name him Best French Player of 2011.
