Spain triumphed in the quarter finals of the Olympics against a difficult rival - France. An agonising game, the result of which was determined during the final minutes thanks to a great performance by Real Madrid players Rudy Fernández (9 points y 4 rebounds) and Sergio Llull (8 points), amongst others. France's inner game presented difficulties for the Spanish team, but in the last quarter Scariolo's team clenched their teeth and managed to get a seven point lead, which the French just couldn't make up for. The result puts Spain in the semi-finals of the Olympics, where they will face Russia for a place in the final.

The game began with Spain taking the lead, but France didn't take long to dominate the scoreboard. The national team didn't manage to get ahead because of a lack of success with their free throws and from the three-point line. The complete opposite of the French team, who were very accurate and managed to get a lead of seven points. Then, with Sergio Rodríguez and Sergio Llull on the court Spain began to get closer to their rivals on the scoreboard until the end of the first quarter (22-17).

The game soon changed, back and forth, with good fast breaks from both teams, which helped France to stay ahead with seven more points (35-28) for almost the entire second quarter. But five consecutive points from Rudy Fernández brought Spain closer to France on the scoreboard. Moreover, the arrival of Felipe Reyes on the court, marking two free throws, brought the draw even closer (37-34).

The second half began with the same initial five points and Spain was at 0-7 which meant they could finally take the lead on the scoreboard (37-41). The two teams drew on the scoreboard for the third quarter, which France finished with two points ahead. The scores in the last quarter were very much the same. Sergio Rodríguez and Sergio Llull came on who, with a good block from Gasol, got a great slam dunk in, putting Scariolo's team ahead on the scoreboard (57-58) with five minutes to go before the end.

Spain's strength gave Spain the greatest lead in the match with one minute to go (57-62). A foul for misconduct from Batum with seconds to go meant Spain put the finishing touch to the game, allowing them to go through to the semi-finals. Now the Real Madrid players will fight for a medal in the Olympics.
