Nikola Mirotic has been named the MVP of the Liga Endesa 2012-13 regular season, replacing the American player Andy Panko. The Real Madrid player achieved this honor for the first time, after a PRI average of 16.2 over 33 matches and leading Madrid to its best regular season in the last 40 years. The ex-academy player was voted for ahead of the four other members of the dream team, his teammates Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Rodriguez, and Nocioni (Laboral Kutxa) and Tomic (Barcelona Regal).
If last season saw his consecration in the Euroleague, where for the second year running he won the Rising Star prize for the best young player in the competition, this season he has burst onto the scene in the ACB. At the age of 22 and in his fourth season in Real Madrid colors, the former youth-team player has become one of the big stars of the Spanish league. His great regular season, where he has averaged 12.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and a 16.2 PRI, has helped him to carve his name amongst the best players in this competition and take over from the former Lagun Aro player Andy Panko, who won it in 2011-12.
Mirotic’s progress has no limits and this year he has become Real Madrid’s leader. The Hispano-Montenegrin was included in the All-ACB Team and was named player of the round in rounds 2 and 21. With his memorable display against Blancos de Rueda Valladolid, with a PRI of 46, he went down in ACB-history as the youngest player to score such a high figure. Madrid had not seen such high figures since Sabonis and Arlauckas in ‘95. Of the 33 matches he has played in the Liga Regular (the only defeat came in the last match against Lagun Aro), the Madrid power forward has played in 29, averaging 23 minutes per match.
He scored PRIs in the twenties in a dozen matches and his improvement over last season has been spectacular. He has gone from an average score of nine points to 12.6, from four rebounds to over five, and from a PRI of 11 to 16, and has also progressed in all aspects of the game including steals, blocks, fouls received and shooting percentage. Mirotic has led a record Real Madrid, with 30 wins in the regular season and the best attack of the last 24 seasons.
