Antonio Villaraigosa, mayor of Los Angeles, visited Real Madrid at UCLA's North Athletic Field. The Californian city leader presented a framed diploma in honour of the club's 110 years of existence and received a shirt with his name and the number 1 on the back. He was greeted by president Florentino Pérez, third vicepresident Pedro López, board member Enrique Pérez, director of Institutional Relations Emilio Butragueño, Football director Miguel Pardeza and all the members of the Real Madrid squad and coaching staff. “This city and its inhabitants create the perfect atmosphere for a really tough season aiming for major successes. The coaches, led by Mourinho, have decided that this is the ideal place to commence the tough work our team has head of it. Our stay here has become a tradition. We have come the last three seasons and it is an honour to have these grounds as our home during our stay”, said the Real Madrid head.
Florentino Pérez continued: “The United States has once again given us their usual warm welcome and I would like to express our gratitude for the affection, hospitality and passion with which you have welcomed us, all that Real Madrid entails. The love of football has grown considerably here and support for Real Madrid knows no borders. Real Madrid is a club for everyone, it's universal, and this is one of the motivations for seeking new challenges. Our country is experiencing difficult times and Real Madrid has been one of the best images of our country, an ambassador. We want to pass on the values that have made our legend great: solidarity, respect, the conviction that nothing is impossible... Wherever Real Madrid plays, you will have a place in its heart”.
For his part, Antonio Villaraigosa welcomed the Whites and their entourage and said, “this team has been visiting us for three years. This is the most Spanish speaking city and the city with the largest Hispanic population in the United States. This team has the most famous names in football, it's Spain and Madrid's best ambassador, and I hope it continues to visit us every Summer”.
