Raphaël Varane was the player called upon to speak to the media in a pre-game interview alongside the Real coach. The French defender, back with the squad after missing the clash in the Romareda, gave his opinion about the upcoming match against Galatasaray: "We aim to win the Champions and it would be a letdown if we don’t beat Galatasaray. We want to get the best result possible and that starts with a good score at home”.
The Whites want to get the most out of the first-leg match on their home pitch in order to face the second leg in Turkey with as much as an advantage as possible: “I don’t think that Galatasaray is afraid to play against us, they’re going to attack and make things difficult. If we play against a team that attacks, we’ll attack more. I don’t know if that’s good. At this stage we have to be focused during the entire match. They could make a dangerous play at any moment. We can’t overlook anything because they’re very quick”.
Burak Yilmaz is one of the Champions League’s top scorers along with Cristiano Ronaldo: both have netted eight times so far this competition and Varane is aware that his team will have to keep a close eye on the Turkish striker: “We know that he’s a good forward that has made a lot of goals in the Champions and that he’s fast with a lot of physical skill. He’s a good player; we have to be very careful and keep an eye on what he does”.
The centre-back said that he feels calm ahead of the clash against Galatasaray: “I’m not nervous. I’m focused when I play and I don’t think about external pressure. I’m focused on what I have to do and I don’t think about anything else”. When asked about the match and the level of pressure on the defense, Varane said: “We study the opponent’s game but we can’t anticipate their actions. I don’t think that we’ll have to be more aggressive, it depends on the intensity of the match. You have to adapt”.
The French defender has become a regular in Mourinho’s recent line-ups at just 19 years old: “I think it’s a major step that will give me experience and I feel good. It’s good for me and I’ll have to take advantage of it in order to continue growing”. When asked if a year ago he could have imagined playing in the quarterfinals of Europe’s top competition, Varane replied: “Not last year. I was working every day and I never thought of reaching this goal so quickly. Being here now is a great joy and I want to keep getting better in order to play even more”.
