Real Madrid lost to Montepaschi Siena in their first home game of the Top 16. The visitors had a great first period and Real missed many shots. Felipe Reyes was the team's best man, banking 17 points and pulling down 15 rebounds.
Mirotic and Carroll made the starting lineup, with Pablo Laso looking to score several points early in the game, but it was Siena who had the better start, having a 0-14 run after Mirotic and Carroll netted two three-pointers. The Whites were hasty in offence, while Montepashi were patient and followed McCalebb's initiative (12 points) and also scored through Moss and Lavrinovic (15-31).
Real Madrid pulled rank when the score was 26-45 with three minutes to go in the first period. They strengthened their defence and kept the visiting shooters in check. This forced the Italians to rely only on McCalebb. Real also started to focus more on scoring from offensive rebounds rather than from shots. Reyes led them in a 10-2 run that cut distances shorter by half-time (36-47).
But the Madridistas' aim was unusually poor, netting only 6 of 24 field goal attempts and 4 out of 20 three-pointers. They fought for every possession, but every Llull and Reyes venture in offence was countered by a three-pointer by the visitors (48-65).
Another three-pointer from Lavrinovic gave Siena a 20-point cushion, but Real stayed in the fight with a spectacular 10-0 run in three minutes that kept them only ten points behind with five minutes left (60-70). Unfortunately, their tremendous efforts were not enough. McCalebb and Andersen banked two baskets that brought Madrid's reaction to an end. Nevertheless, Laso's boys kept fighting to the very end.
