The Whites play a spectacular game at the Bernabeu

Fernando Porrero / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

Jose Mourinho prophesied goals would come and they did. Deportivo lost 6-1 at the Bernabeu; Real Madrid were simply brilliant and incredibly effective in attack.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the opener with a spectacular header on the 3-minute mark. It took Deportivo 15 minutes to recover from such a blow, but as soon as they did, Ozil stepped up and scored a second strike for the Whites (23’). The German received the ball following an effort between Ronaldo and Higuain and sent the ball grazing the far post.

Real Madrid continued playing a fast game. Deportivo had good touch on ball, but were not dangerous in attack. Ten minutes later, Di Maria netted a third from a brilliant header that finished off a phenomenal cross served by Higuain down the left wing. Mourinho’s men continued to be a threat on Deportivo’s goal till half-time.

The second half saw Lass coming on for Khedira, but the replacement did not change the team’s tactics. Deportivo had a great chance to score on the 47-minute mark when Carvalho tripped, leaving Lassad to face Casillas alone, but the Real Madrid captain pulled rank and saved the day.

Deportivo’s troubles increased just five minutes later, when Higuain pushed in a fantastic assist from Di Maria on the goal-line. The Whites carried on and soon tallied their fifth strike helped by Ze Castro, who scored an own goal trying to clear the ball in the box. Mourinho kept asking his men to look for more goals and decided to make Granero come on for Ozil (68’).

The coach also allowed youth teamer Juan Carlos to make his debut at the Bernabeu by bringing in Di Maria. Deportivo then focused on attacking more and kept their honour by scoring a nice goal through Juan Rodriguez. But Cristiano Ronaldo saved the best for last and netted his team’s sixth and final goal from a fast and beautiful individual effort that sealed a brilliant match for Real Madrid.
