Real Madrid have scored 71 goals in 26 weeks, a feat Madridistas hadn't seen since Toschack was head coach and the team netted 107 goals. Hugo Sanchez and Butragueño led the attack then and between the two had 36 goals to their names at the same stage of the competition, while the team had notched 74 (three more than now). Higuain and Cristiano are now the offensive strike force and account for 34 goals this year; an average of nearly a goal apiece per match.
No Madridista squad has come close to the 107 goals scored back in 1989/90. Many titles have been won and celebrated, but no attacking duo has managed to equal the mark that Hugo Sanchez and Butragueño helped set. But this may be the year.
Real Madrid lead La Liga and Europe's top leagues with 71 goals and average 2.73 goals per match. What's more, no team does as well at home as Real Madrid, who have scored 44 goals in the Santiago Bernabeu. All in all, the team is putting up the best numbers seen in the last 20 years.
